INTRODUCTION TO EMBROIDERY—Stitches and Techniques
This is a BASIC level embroidery course, with no pre-requisite of experience required for enrolment.
The aim is to introduce the student to a wide variety of techniques which will be covered during the period of the course, including their historical context.
Course Information:
The course is anticipated to run over 2 years. Class attendance will be one 5-hour day per month, for 10 months per year, February to November inclusive, on the first Saturday of each month, with follow up work to be completed at home.
Topics Covered during the course include:
- Canvas Stitchery
- Surface Stitchery
- Counted Thread Work, including Pulled and Drawn Threadwork
- Fine Embroidery
- Patchwork and Appplique
- Metal Thread Embroidery
- First Steps in Colour and Design
Students will be required to develop a resource folder, to include:
- An introduction and history of the topic
- Examination of the fabric and threads used for the technique
- Series of worked samples devised by the tutor to give understanding of the technique
- A small worked piece of the student’s choice to show what they have learned
A certificate of completion is awarded to those students who successfully complete all sections of the course within the set period of the course.
Expression of interest will be invited following an information day to be held at the Guild, for the next course commencing February 2011.
Financial membership of the Embroiderers' Guild NSW Inc throughout the full term of the course, is a pre-requisite for enrolment.
Intermediate level Embroidery (2 Years)
This course is to provide a course of study that will enable students to further develop skills in stitching techniques and use them in an innovative way. It will also further their knowledge and appreciation of the History of Embroidery and increase their increase their knowledge and experience in the areas of Colour and Design. They will explore a wide variety of media and develop processes that will allow them to become capable of expressing their own ideas.
Criteria of entry to the course will be satisfactory completion of Basic Techniques or pesentation of a portfolio of three recently completed works, Resource Folders, Visual Diaries, Samplers and any other relevant documentation.
Advanced Traditional Embroidery Techniques - Certificate Course
This is a course of intensive self-directed practice and study of a single technique, the aim of which is to guide participants to achieve a higher standard of knowledge, understanding and skill in one of the techniques listed below. The course runs for one year with bi-monthly attendance under the guidance of the Course Facilitator.
The criteria for entry is the satisfactory completion of Intermediate level Embroidery, or completion of an appropriate Course at another venue, or pesentation of a portfolio of work relevant to the chosen technique, including stitch samples and completed works, which shows clear evidence of the ability to proceed to this level. The student will be required to work privately and to produce 3 major pieces of work and a portfolio showing detailed documented research of the technique, exercises in the development of the technique, ideas, design and colour. They will be required to display their work, in exhibition style at the end of the Course.
This course can be undertaken in one of the following techniques: Applique, Canvas Work, Counted Thread, Drawn Thread, Machine Embroidery, Metal Thread Embroidery, Needlelace, Patchwork, Pulled Fabric, Quilting, Surface Stitchery, Three Dimensional Embroidery, Whitework.
Proficiency Certificate Course - Advanced Technique and Design
This course does not aim to teach a candidate the chosen technique. It is designed to enable a candidate who is already proficient in a technique to demonstrate their ability to work independently at a high level of proficiency in areas of Technique and Design. The course involves intensive self-directed study. The course runs over two years, with bi-monthly attendance at interview with the team of course mentors.
Participants will be required to display their work, in exhibition style at the end of the course.
Proficiency Course can be undertaken in the following techniques: Applique, Canvas Work, Counted Thread, Drawn Thread, Machine Embroidery, Metal Thread Embroidery, Needlelace, Patchwork, Pulled Fabric, Quilting, Surface Stitchery, Three Dimensional Embroidery, Whitework.
A Certificate of Achievement will be awarded to the successful participants.
A Certificate of Achievement in this course is not a teaching qualification or accreditation as a teacher.
