Course Outline
Learn the techniques of traditional crewel embroidery and variations by stitching designs adapted from historical sources.
Learn about appropriate fabrics, yarns and equipment, explore the stitches, and read an overview of the impact of embroidery in society during each period from Elizabethan times to the present.
This course is designed for those with basic to intermediate experience and also provides advanced students with an opportunity to extend their skills
Module 1: Elizabethan flowers
Module 2: Jacobean leaves
Module 3: Deerfield
Module 4: Long and short stitch, William Morris style
Module 5: Mountmellick work
Module 6: Art Nouveau/Glasgow Style
Module 7: Art Deco/Traced Linen
Module 8: Contemporary
The eight modules are available for purchase at any time during the year. Each module includes course notes, written assessment and feedback for modules returned within six months of purchase. Module 1 also includes 10 coloured photos of historical examples of works from the Guild Collection and course facilitator.
The kit cost for each module varies and is available on request. Materials and threads for the course have been specially selected for suitability, availability and economy by The Threaded Needle at special members' prices. This cost is in addition to the purchase price of modules.
This course is only open to members of the Guild. Financial membership of the Guild throughout the full term of the course is a pre-requisite for enrolment.
