A wide variety of whitework techniques have been practised by embroiderers for centuries ranging from the exquisite Ayrshire needlelace techniques of Scotland to the highly textural surface embroidered Mountmellick work of Ireland. Whitework was used traditionally in fashion and household linens.

Contemporary whitework techniques build on these traditional techniques and stitches using modern threads and fabrics in an innovative way, often combined with unusual materials such as paper and found objects.

This is a relaxed fun class where participants will learn about the history and techniques of whitework and experiment using beautiful fabrics and threads, either from your own stash or from the Guild’s Threaded Needle shop. There will be plenty of design sources and inspiration available and assistance with design.
