The title of this workshop is derived from the Pattern & Decoration Movement in Visual Arts in America in the 1970s and 80s. The artists in this movement were young and had been studying Western and non-Western art history in their degree programmes. The latter was to strongly influence their personal aesthetics. They were inspired by, for example, abstract patterns on non-Western textile arts and the interiors and exteriors of Islamic architecture. They referenced the crafts of embroidery and beading. They were intent on breaking down the divide between fine art and craft. Pre-workshop, do google such artists as Miriam Schapiro, Joyce Kozloff, Kim MacConnel, Robert Kushner.

The aim of this two day workshop is to have all participants leave with a patterned design to embroider, a colour palette and samples of stitches to possibly use. Participants will be encouraged to consider using disparate patterns together with a plethora of inspirational material, but also bring your own images to the workshop. For those who are interested in repeat patterns, these will be demonstrated.

A requirements list will be sent out to enrolled participants a few weeks before Summer School.
