Val became interested in embroidery at an early age, in primary school where her enthusiasm was encouraged by her teacher. Val’s continued interest led to joining the Embroiderers’ Guild in 1998 where she has completed many workshops and courses.

In 2010 Val completed The Proficiency Certificate in Surface Stitchery, gaining a distinction. She then successfully completed the Tutors Accreditation Certificate in 2011. Val currently teaches Surface Stitchery for the Basic Techniques Course. She is also is a member of the Library Team and the Monthly Exhibition Team.

In 2007 Val was awarded first prize in the Inaugural Acquisitive Margaret Oppen prize competition at the 50th Anniversary Festival and was proud to have her work acquired for the Guild’s collection.

In July 2013 Val exhibited some of her work at a group exhibition at Timeless Textiles Gallery in Newcastle. Most recently at the end of  2013, Val collaborated in a small work for WD Pty Ltd films.

Val enjoys traditional and contemporary embroidery and much of her work is inspired by her love of gardening and flowers often feature in her work. She has also studied Botanical Art which has enabled her to create detailed works using Silk Shading techniques. Val has completed the Goldwork Course by correspondence and likes to combine the technique with surface stitchery.
