Stitchers Plus Stitchers
Mission
Under the auspices of the Embroiderers’ guild, Stitches Plus mission is to foster the artistic self-development of individual members by providing encouraging support, by the sharing of ideas and by giving a comfortable and friendly social base on which to build strengths.
History
The group was created in 1999 after four embroiderers, having completed the Intermediate Certificate, were aware of the need for the group to continue our artistic development. We initially wanted to re-visit many aspects of our course to further develop ideas presented. Those plans were never realised but the three of the four remaining members have been creating and executing their own designs since then.
Meeting
We begin each year with a flexible plan. We all like to work independently as well as participate in group collaborations for the Guild’s state exhibitions.
Currently, we are working through our own individual self-directed challenges which range from completing UFOs to creating works for the Quilt and Craft show booth to learning and practicing new techniques. We are also running mini workshops presented by a different member each month. These workshops can be design projects, stitching projects, book reviews, the options are endless. The aim of the workshops is to have a group activity that may or may not lead to further work but will often get our members thinking in new directions.
Generally, we all attempt to stitch our own projects during our meetings while we do show and tell. This is the time when members can get advice on works in progress. Suggestions abound when a problem is presented with ‘option overload’ a happy result.
Membership
We are currently a small group with openings for new members who are committed to self-directed works. We have a wealth of knowledge and will freely share it with likeminded artists. We offer a fun and stimulating atmosphere with no pressure to produce. Participation in our challenges or activities at any time has always been optional.
